Can I disinherit someone?

Yes, California law allows adults to disinherit most relatives, including adult children, through a properly drafted will or trust. However, there are limited protections for surviving spouses and minor children that cannot be completely overridden.

If you wish to exclude someone from your estate, it is critical to work with an estate planning attorney to do so correctly — a poorly worded exclusion can be challenged and overturned in probate court.
