Does a trustee get paid?

Usually yes. California law allows trustees to receive reasonable compensation unless the trust specifically states otherwise. Compensation often depends on the complexity of the estate, the nature of the assets, the amount of time involved, and the level of responsibility assumed by the trustee.

Trustees handling businesses, litigation, investment management, or complex tax matters generally perform substantially more work than trustees administering simpler estates.
