How long can a trustee hold assets before distributing them?

A trustee is expected to act within a reasonable time under the circumstances. Some distributions may occur relatively quickly, while others may need to wait until taxes, audits, creditor claims, property sales, or legal disputes are resolved.

Trustees who delay distributions unnecessarily may expose themselves to beneficiary complaints or potential legal liability, particularly if communication with beneficiaries has been poor.
