Lessons from Kobe

kobegianna.jpgOn January 26th, the world was shocked by the sudden and tragic passing of basketball legend, Kobe Bryant. Add to that tragedy, his 13-year-old daughter was with him, along with 7 others who were in that helicopter that crashed in California.

Whether you liked Kobe or not, one thing is for certain, his death has certainly touched millions of people around the world in ways that nobody was quite prepared for. He not only left his legacy in the basketball world as an athlete and a competitor, but he was also someone's husband, son, and the father to his beautiful daughters.

With any kind of unthinkable event, one way to help process what has happened is by taking away what can be learned from it and how you might be able to turn such a sad situation into something that might make yourself and your life better.

One of the lessons that can be taken away from this is the importance of being more present in my daily life. It's really easy to zone out with work, parenting, school, being on social media or your phone, watching TV, whatever it may be. There are interviews with Kobe about why he made the decision to travel by helicopter in the first place and it has to do with not missing out on games and events for his kids. Not everybody has that luxury to do that, but the intention behind it is admirable. We talk all the time about how quickly life passes and the kids grow up. They will not be little forever and you may not have the opportunity to live out the experiences you get each day with them again. Which brings us to...

Probably one of the biggest lessons to be learned through Kobe's passing is to be grateful for all that you have, the people and blessings that we have in our lives. There are multiple people who have said that they did not realize their last phone call or interaction with Kobe would be their last. It's one more jolting reminder about why we simply cannot take anything for granted in this precious life that we have been given.

Last, but certainly not least, another important lesson to be taken away is that there is no promise for someday. Someday may never come. You just don't know, because life is so uncertain. It's one of the reasons why many of us got into the area of estate planning. Estate planning helps people put a plan in action for the "what ifs" in life, so that you can have that peace of mind should something unexpectedly happen to you (or your loved ones).

That being said, we implore each and every one of you reading this to consider either getting your estate plan put in place (or making sure that you have your current plan reviewed to ensure that it's up-to-date and everything is in order). If you are in the greater Southern California area and have any friends, family members, coworkers, neighbors or other people you may know that could also benefit from our services, we would love to have you at one of our upcoming seminars to begin that process.

In conclusion, there is a lot of different kinds of emotions and feelings that can come up when such an unexpected and sudden tragedy occurs. It's okay to have these feelings. The important step here is to take away the potential good that can be taken from it and carry it out in your life every single day. Seeing the kind of hard worker that Kobe was, we'd like to believe what he'd want all of us. It's a true testament to the legacy that he has left us with.
